• Translation App: iTranslate

iTranslate is the most popular translation app for smart phones and tablets, and rightly so. It does what it says on the label. It is very user friendly and giving the pronunciation as well as the word is extremely useful.

Over 80 different languages are supported, but it does require 3G or Wifi connection to work. There are voice input and output features where you can select between different dialects of the same language and even control the speaking rate in the premium, paid version of the app. Personally I just stick with the free version and so far that has met my needs. I can see living in a country which has a different alphabet to my own would make the speech recognition tools extremely useful.

  • Translation App: Word Lens

Word Lens uses augmented reality to translate printed and written text without a network connection. Word Lens automatically translates the text and overlays it on the same image on the phone's display. It is a bit freaky when you see the letters jump around in front of your eyes and form the new ones! It does work, not as accurately as iTranslate, but for novelty factor alone this is worth a download, especially as it is free right now (Nov.2014). Google has acquired the company, so things may change in the future.

To use the translation tool, users select which languages they want to translate to and from before holding the camera up to the text. Once a language pack has been downloaded, the user doesn't need a network connection. Languages include Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German. The app is available on iOS, Android and Google Glass.
